As of Mac OS X 10.6, hard disks, external disks, connected servers, CDs, DVDs, and iPods no longer appear on the desktop by default. Accounts on systems that were upgraded from Mac OS X 10.5 will typically be unaffected by this change, as it will inherit the old behavior. All of these volumes now appear in Finder windows, but the old behavior can be restored with a simple preference modification.

Customizing

  1. Go to the Finder by clicking on its icon.

  2. Select Preferences from the Finder menu.

  3. Under the General tab, you may select which devices you would like to appear on the Desktop.
