The serial number of your Apple products can be easily found in four ways:

  • On the External Case (required for displays)
  • In the About This Mac Menu
  • Using System Profiler
  • Using Terminal

On the External Case

See Apple's guide on where to look.

In the 'About This Mac' Menu

  1. Click on the Apple menu and select About This Mac.

  2. Click on the text that appears below the words "Mac OS X" until the Serial Number appears. It usually takes 3 clicks.

Using System Profiler

  1. Click on the Apple menu and select About This Mac.

  2. Click on the "More info..." button.

  3. The serial number should be on the first screen of the System Profiler (Hardware), usually toward the bottom of the list.

Using Terminal

  1. In Terminal, enter the following:
    ioreg -l | grep IOPlatformSerialNumber
  2. The serial number will be in quotes after the "=" sign.
