There is a short list of characters that cannot be used when naming files and folders on SMB storage. Here are the special characters to avoid in creating file and folder names:

<
>
:
/
\
|
?
*

"periods" at the end of folder name.
"space" at the beginning and end of a folder name.

Avoiding these characters should prevent creating new folders or files that are problematic to access. Feel free to let us know if you encounter any other issues.

UPDATE: Easier way to remember: only use letters, numbers, underscores, and dashes in any file and folder names.
